Yoshiko Sushi is located at 7117 Bathurst in Vaughan, the municipality just north of Toronto's west end. Yoshiko is a small place with only about a dozen tables. Pop is $1.50 per can, not AYCD. Soy sauce at table was wine-like, very fresh, and not salty; it is all green-lid low-sodium. Unfortunately disposable chopsticks are used, so I bring my own as usual. Ordering is old-school from a paper menu template.
Although the green salad was nothing but lettuce, it was delicious with a house soy ginger sesame dressing. Miso soup was excellent, rich and with plenty of umami. Beef teriyaki was quite good, steak-like and the sauce was good although a little too sweet. Chicken katsu was very good, although it did not appear so when first delivered, it was quite tasty and the sauce was good with all of the flavors balanced. Deep fry scallops, probably surimi, were very good and the sauce was excellent. Chicken teriyaki was a bit dry but quite tasty and the sauce was good. Bacon-wrapped (enoki) mushrooms were quite good, well... for enoki mushrooms at least, as I am not a fan; I guess bacon-wrapped anything is quite good! Chicken skewers were fantastic, smoky, perfectly cooked and wonderfully savory. Pineapple chicken was good although again the sauce was very sweet. Shrimp tempura was excellent, light and flaky, and yam tempura was also very good. The tempura sauce was very good and not too sweet.
Wonton soup was unique and delicious, with a dark interesting broth that I enjoyed. Sadly, the hot and sour soup would be barely okay if it was called something else, but it did not taste like hot and sour soup much... too much hot and zero sour, and a hint of caramel which I could not explain; I didn't like it at all and it was difficult to finish. As well the cheese wontons were good, but the sauce had a strange tinny flavor over top of the citrus which ruined it.
Salmon nigiri was excellent, with very fresh salmon and good rice. White tuna nigiri was almost certainly escolar, and was very slightly off from completely fresh, but was still good. Red snapper nigiri was almost certainly tilapia, but was fresher and very good. Surimi crab nigiri was good as well as surf clam nigiri. Philadelphia roll was excellent with smoked salmon.
For dessert, mango and strawberry Jello were good with a mild flavor. Fried banana was good. Green tea, mango, red bean, chocolate and vanilla ice creams were all good. Weekday lunch is $18.99 which is alright for the area but not really a value. Service was good. I did have a good lunch at Yoshiko and almost everything was good but as noted there were a couple of items I didn't enjoy at all that need addressing.
