NO LONGER AYCE - Kathmandu Restaurant & Patio (Indian)

Update: 2021-Aug-20 - There is currently no buffet/AYCE at this location post-lockdown even though it is now permitted, and it is unknown if and when it will ever return. I am therefore removing it from the active list, and will follow up periodically and restore it should it return to AYCE status.
Kathmandu is located at 12 Cumberland Terrace in the heart of downtown Toronto, just north of Yonge and Bloor so is very transit accessible as this is a main intersection of Toronto subway lines. Kathmandu has a darker interior, with classic Indian ragas playing, and nice decor.

Mishy loved the butter chicken (I liked it too) and liked the chicken tandoori, but the latter was dried out and falling apart as it too often is after a while waiting to be eaten. Vegetable pakoras were good, though they were also starting to dry out, although they were not as dry as those from other places. Mishy found the saag paneer bland and usually likes it; I actually loved the saag paneer as it used more masala than paneer spicing which may have been unexpected and possibly why Mishy didn't like it.

Naan was alright, but was rather bland and chewy without any bright fresh-baked and buttery notes; Mishy added that this can be caused by there being too much water in the dough. The samosas had no filling so were really not samosas at all, just a shell which was rather bland. Chana masala was very good, deliciously spiced and the chickpeas at a good texture. Mixed vegetables were delicious and nicely seasoned. Dal makhani was very good and I enjoyed it. Papri chaat was oddly flavoured/seasoned and I only moderately liked it. Coleslaw was very good and fresh. Beets were good and well-seasoned.

For dessert, gulab jamun honey balls were probably good at one point, but had become soggy and mushy from spending too much time in the sauce. Chocolate ice cream was good, vanilla and mango even better. Weekday lunch is $14.99. This isn't bad for the area, but although there were some very good items there were a few sub-par and there are others reasonably close without these issues.
