CLOSED - Hot Pot on Yonge (Chinese)

Update 2021-Aug-28: Unfortunately, Hot Pot on Yonge appears closed. It is listed as Permanently Closed in Google Maps, Closed in Yelp and its phone # is out of service. It is unknown whether this is due to the pandemic or not. This seems like enough evidence that it is no longer around.

Hot Pot on Yonge is located at 5441 Yonge St., just south of Finch so is quite transit-accessible. I went for weekday lunch. Unfortunately disposable chopsticks are used, so I bring my own as always. AYCD iced tea is included which is excellent. Free Wi-Fi is available (use the "5G" connection). There are also four types of included broth: clear, parsley with preserved egg, Satay and vegetable. Soy was fresh but a little salty. I ordered minced garlic, hoisin sauce, and sa cha sauce. Sauces were very good and both of the broth's flavors transferred well to the meats and other ingredients. Soy sauce mixed with with minced ginger was a good combination for dipping.

The usual sliced pork, beef and lamb were all very good especially with the sauces and broth. Tender beef was the best... thicker and tastier than the usual. Chicken was in the same size as the beef and was very good, as was the beef ball. Crab meat, as with sushi places, was probably surimi, and was good with the hoisin sauce. Broccoli, bean sprouts, turnip and potato and spinach were all very good with the broth and sauces. All the ingredients were very fresh.

Wheat gluten is an item that is not found many other places especially with all the food fadists thinking that it's poisonous, and it was quite good. Egg is, well, an egg... a whole uncooked egg which is thrown in for at least three minutes and boiled. Can't go wrong there. Tofu was good as it showed off how much flavor is it absorbed from the broth, as did the dough fritters, would seem like a strange thing to throw into a hot pot but were actually pretty good. Sausage is not traditional, but instead is a hot dog weiner, but once it has been through the hot pot it was pretty good. Luncheon meat resembled spam and was quite tasty.

The desserts on the menu, mango pudding and Chinese herbal Jello, were unfortunately not available. Vanilla ice cream was the only dessert... at least it was good. There is a 10% service charge added to the bill so I let this suffice as my tip. Weekday lunch was $21.99 and with the included broths and iced tea this is a very good value considering other places charge for both on top of an already-more-expensive base price. I had an excellent lunch at Hot Pot on Yonge and would happily return.
