Sushi Garden (Japanese)

Sushi Garden is located at 17915 Leslie St. in the town of Newmarket north of Toronto, near Hwy. 404 and the Davis Dr./Hwy. 31 exit. We went for weekend dinner. Sushi Garden has a colourful modern interior; Mishy said the decor was "tacky" and I do agreed it was a bit loud/garish and the off-axis wallpaper over part of the entryway didn't help. Seating is all chairs with no booths or benches. Disposable chopsticks are used unfortunately, but as always we bring our own. Soy at table was red-lid and salty; green-lid low-sodium is available on request and while not optimal was at least some improvement. Pop $1.75 non-AYCD. Tea is included, and strangely was served in styrofoam cups (Mishy very much detested this particular detail.)


Green salad was very good and fresh in a nice house orange ginger dressing. Miso soup was savoury and darker but had been somewhat watered down. Mishy loved the seaweed salad. Cheese stick was good and a nice change as an appetizer. Dumplings were quite tasty and the dipping sauce was good and tangy. Cheese wontons very good even without sauce and had plenty of cheese filling. Springs rolls and sauce was good and flavorful.


Salmon rose sushi was very good, and welcome on the menu. Crab surimi sashimi very good and fresh. Salmon sashimi also very good and fresh as was butterfish escolar. Unfortunately the red snapper (probably tilapia) sashimi was noticeably off, but still edible although certainly not enjoyable. Philadelphia roll was very good and fresh.


Beef teriyaki was made with shredded beef, and was in a tasty sauce. Chicken teriyaki's sauce was in the same gravy-like sauce, which was unlike teriyaki but good nonetheless although Mishy didn't like it because it wasn't teriyaki. Shrimp tempura was crispy but somewhat oily; the sauce was good. Pork katsu was good in an interestingly flavorful sauce. Chicken fried rice was delicious with a slight mushroom flavor.


For dessert, only ice creams are available. Chocolate, vanilla, green tea and mango were all just OK to begin with, but they were all freezer-burned on top of this which left them with little flavour. Weekend dinner was $27.99, which is less expensive than other places so gains a point there, but not quite enough to compensate for some of the shortcomings.
