CLOSED - Rainbow Sushi - Toronto (Japanese)

Update: 2022-Oct-02: Rainbow appears to be under different ownership and is now "Rainbow Indian & Chinese Hakka" (which I imaging was done so that they didn't need to scrap the signage.) As the prev. instance is gone. updating its status appropriately.

Update: 2021-Aug-20 - This location is not open for dine-in post-lockdown even though it is now permitted, and it is unknown if and when it will ever return. I am therefore removing it from the active list, and will follow up periodically and restore it should it return to AYCE dine-in status.

Rainbow Sushi is located at 3450 Bathurst St. in Toronto, north of Lawrence. It possibly also has a location in Oshawa, as they have the same name although I am unsure if they are related. We went for weekend lunch. $1.99 AYCD pop is available, even though it is canned, which is very welcome and was hard to find but is catching on recently. Sashimi is available for $3, however it is a fixed set of six types, including octopus, so I disregarded. Unfortunately disposable chopsticks are used, so I brought my own. Soy sauce at table was very salty, however low sodium is available, although it wasn't much better.



Mishy liked the portion size of the miso soup, which was tasty and savory, but not as much as it could have been as it was slightly dilute; she also indicated that the wakame salad was very good and fresh. Green salad had a nice creamy wasabi dressing and was fresh and very good. General Tso/Tao chicken was not bad but had excessive batter and less chicken; Mishy also thought the sauce was too sweet but I did not.

Salmon nigiri was good. Red snapper nigiri was almost certainly tilapia that was fresh and good, as was white tuna AKA escolar. Crunchy salmon sushi was very good, as was the green dragon Rolls. Crab surimi and surf clam nigiri were good, although the surf clam was a little dry.

Spring rolls are served with sauce already on them. Mishy said they were very good, I would just disregard the "very". Chicken katsu was quite crunchy, but tasty and the sauce was good. Mishy also loved the chicken skewers; the chicken was very tender and not chewy or dried out. Chicken teriyaki was very good in basically the same sauce. We did not order chicken wings, but received them anyway. Rather than them going to waste, I ate them; they were very well-done but still moist and tasty, although the breading was heavy. Gyoza beef were delicious; among the better I've had. Mushroom tempura was good. Sesame chicken was pretty much the same as General Tso/Tao, except of course for the addition of sesame seeds. Beef udon soup was quite good although it may have had excessive wakame for some people, but I didn't mind and it's very healthy. Stir-fried vegetables were quite good although the sauce was a little too sweet for me. Shrimp tempura was good and the tempura dipping sauce was very good.

For dessert red bean, vanilla, mango ice creams were fresh and good. Banana tempura was good although it had no sauce. Cream puff tempura was also good and unique. Weekend lunch was $16.95 which is good for the offerings especially with the AYCD canned pop. While not superlative, there was nothing in the meal either of us didn't like and it was an enjoyable lunch.
