Akita Sushi (Japanese)

Akita Sushi is located at 5451 York Regional Road 7 (aka Highway 7) in Woodbridge, the municipality north of Toronto’s west end. close to the north end of Highway 427. Akita has a modern interior with almost all booth seating and uses iPad menus. Disposable chopsticks are also present unfortunately but we brought our own as always. AYCD pop is $1.50, also canned is present if preferred; Coke Zero is on tap which is excellent. Soy at table was a bit salty but good. We went for weekend lunch.

Mishy loved the seaweed salad saying that it was fresh and good. Green salad was also good and fresh and the dressing was tasty although a bit understated. Miso soup was good and had plenty of savor, although Mishy found it to be bland. Wonton soup was excellent and flavorful and savoury and we both loved it; a touch of soy sauce improved it a little but it was already great.

Salmon nigiri was good though not superlative, and fresh enough. Crab (surimi) sushi was not the freshest, but still good. Tamago (egg) nigiri was good, as was the Philadelphia roll. Spicy salmon sushi we both loved with its good balance of spice.  Mishy did not like the cheese wontons (aka butterfly) saying they were too oily and had only a tiny amount of cheese; I didn't find them any worse than those at other places, but Mishy actually has evidence to back up her opinion as a small amount of hot oil escaped a wonton and slightly burned her thigh (no, no lawsuit is planned!) Chicken teriyaki was delicious, possibly due to the inclusion of soy sauce in the sauce, and Mishy and I both loved it; the chicken was also tender and Mishy admitted not rubbery. Strangely, beef teriyaki had the same sauce but Mishy did not like it on that, I guess it went better with chicken.

Beef broccoli was very good, with a slightly milder version of the teriyaki sauce, although the broccoli was al dente. Mishy liked the lemon chicken, although she said that the chicken was a cheap cut and there was too much breading, but she enjoyed the sauce; I didn't mind it, although I have had better. Shrimp tempura was good and not too oily, and the sauce was also good. Teppanyaki vegetables and beef udon soup both very good but watch out for the portion size for each.

For dessert, strawberry ice cream was excellent, red bean good though missing the mysterious flavour, mango I found not sweet enough but Mishy said it was delicious. Green tea ice cream was good, chocolate very good. Service was fast and good. It was $21.99 for weekend lunch, which, what with the $1.50 AYCD pop was a good price. Nothing a Akita was really stand-out except perhaps for the wonton soup, but it was all good and an enjoyable and and the price was appropriately reasonable.
