Matsuda Japanese BBQ

Matsuda Japanese BBQ is located in the former premises of Ten-Ichi at 4810 Sheppard Ave. E., just w. of Markham Rd. Matsuda has a very nice, modern interior with good ambiance. Reusable chopsticks are used. Soy at table was very fresh and quite sweet.

House salad was very good, in an original ginger house dressing. Miso soup was excellent and flavorful. Sweet sausage are small whole sausages rather than slices, and were quite good and more European than at other places, reminding me of market sausages. Pork belly aka bacon was excellent especially with the soy and shaking spice. Zucchini was very good when grilled with shaking spice and dipped in sweet soy. Soba is traditional with quail egg to be mixed with sauce and poured over it, the flavour combined is quite nice. And of course, we both enjoyed the bibimbap.

For dessert, Matsuda offers the same coconut and honeydew Melona bars as Gyubee, but also adds lychee and mango yogurt, which were excellent. All in all, Matsuda is quite similar to Gyubee while being a little more expensive, and having fewer of the signature items ie cabbage salad. Weekend lunch $24.99. If we wanted to return, we'd probably end up going to Gyubee instead, but it was still enjoyable, although the price must be factored in.

Rating: 7.5-8/10

(Note also that this visit and review were done before the long COVID-19 closure; Matsuda is now only open for dinner, which is $35 weekdays and $38 on weekends.)
