CLOSED - Mizuki Sushi (Japanese)

Update 2019-Dec-2: Mizuki Sushi has closed; there is now a bubble tea shop in the same location (same phone number too.)

Mizuki Sushi is located at 3555 Don Mills Rd. just north of Finch in a small plaza. Mizuki has a nice modern interior. We went for weekend lunch. Free Wi-Fi is available.  Unfortunately disposable chopsticks are used, so I bring my own. Ginger is not dyed pink. All soy sauce was low-sodium green-lid not salty and fresh. Pop is $1 AYCD, and was somewhat watered down, but that is to be expected for this low price. Ordering is old-school from the menu using numbers onto small paper templates.











Miso soup would have been savory and very good, but was a little bit dilute. Beef soup is beef udon soup without the udon and with extra wakame, and was good. I loved the green salad, especially the wasabi dressing but mishy said it was underwhelming. Mishy added that the wakame salad was pretty much the same as elsewhere. I liked the chicken teriyaki but Mishy said it was again no better than anywhere else. Shrimp tempura was very light and flaky, and with very good dipping sauce, and there was no oil at all on the vegetable yam and pumpkin tempura.

Chicken katsu AKA chicken cutlet AKA torikatsu is not served with sauce, but it can be asked for. This is also true for the pork variety. The sauce was good although gave away its ketchup roots. The katsu was very good with the sauce and I could not imagine it without it. Chicken skewers are also served with no sauce but they did not really need it. Freshly seasoned with cumin, they were among if not the best skewers we have ever had. Spring rolls are similarly served with no sauce. It was good but the missing sauce was noticeable.

Torched salmon nigiri was very good and brought out the flavor well. White tuna nigiri is almost definitely escolar and was fresh and good. Red snapper nigiri was almost definitely tilapia and was also fresh and good, as was the surf clam. Salmon rose nigiri was good but a bit deficient on sauce.

Unfortunately beef teriyaki is a  dinner-only item. Even the Philadelphia rolls are only on the dinner menu which is rather strange. Cheese wontons were also served without sauce... also strange. Deep fried surimi scallops did have enough sauce on them and were quite good. Agedashi tofu also had plenty of sauce and because of that was very good. Gyoza dumplings were good with the tempura dipping sauce. But she wasn't too big on the volcano roll but I liked it. It took three attempts to get my chicken curry, which is chicken katsu with curry sauce, but it was worth the wait as was very good.

For dessert, green tea, strawberry and vanilla ice cream was good and fresh, chocolate was excellent, but red bean and mango were slightly freezer burned. Shot-glass dessert mango pudding was good though understated, strawberry Jell-O was good. Weekend lunch is $21.99 which is at the high end, but the AYCD pop offsets this. While it was enjoyable and many of the items were good and a couple excellent, we didn't like that too much is confined to the dinner menu and having no sauce with some of the offerings was just odd. For these reason it is an OK value.
