CLOSED - Asaka Sushi (Japanese)

Update 2019-Dec.-2 - Sadly, Asaka Sushi closed four months ago and was sold and replaced by an à la carte Chinese restaurant. This is unfortunate as we had enjoyed it very much.

Asaka Sushi is located at 380 Lakeshore Road East in Mississauga in a small strip mall about one kilometre east of Hurontario. It has a nice interior and looks like it has been there a while. Asaka uses disposable chopsticks unfortunately, but I bring my own as always. Ordering is done "old school" from a menu onto printed order sheets. Soy sauce was indicated to be made in-house and low-sodium; it was flavorful but I still found it somewhat salty. Green tea was excellent in a Japanese-style ceramic mug, so I didn't require any pop.


Mishy loved the wakame seaweed salad. Miso soup was excellent and savory and clumped perfectly. Green salad was excellent, crisp and had very good dressing. Spring rolls were excellent, also crisp. Cheese wontons had sauce already in them and plenty of cheese, and Mishy loved them like that (also they were not too hot that they could burn.) She described the gyoza as "perfect", and also loved the General Tso's chicken. I agreed with all of her  assessments... the General Tao/Tso was loaded with chicken and with little to no coating or breading. The Japanese hash brown was served plain; the expected dip would be the tempera sauce, which it was good with. Shrimp tempura was light and flaky and very good. Hot and sour soup was thick, rich with ingredients, and delicious.


Teppanyaki "steak" tofu was steak-like in shape only, just fried breaded tofu with sauce, but was good as far as that goes; Mishy also enjoyed it. Salmon nigiri was excellent; the rice was a very good consistency and the waitress indicated that it's the chef's own personal recipe. Philadelphia roll was also very good due to the rice consistency. Agedashi tofu was good with a nice sauce, probably the same as the tempura sauce. Beef udon soup was excellent, savory and happily had no tiny mushrooms in it.

For dessert, mango, strawberry, and mocha mousse cakes were the same brand as used at 8 Sushi and so many other establishments, but I do enjoy them. One unique dessert that Asaka Sushi has is almond coconut pudding, which was alright although a bit mildly flavoured. There was also the very desirable ginger ice cream. That and the red bean, mango and green tea ice creams were very fresh and good. Service was very fast and attentive, almost excessively so. Weekend lunch price was $17.99 (it's $1 less on weekdays) which these days is good. There were no all-beef dishes (ie teriyaki) or other pricey exotics on the menu, but Asaka does do the basics very well and at a reasonable price. We certainly both enjoyed lunch there!
