Rainbow Sushi (Japanese)

Update: 2022-Oct-02 - Rainbow's AYCE menu is back (lunch $22.99, dinner $33.99) so happy to welcome Rainbow back to the list!

Update: 2021-Aug-20 - There is currently no AYCE at this location post-lockdown (takeout only though could open now) and it is unknown if and when it will ever return. I am therefore removing it from the active list, and will follow up periodically and restore it should it return to AYCE status.

Rainbow Sushi is located at 1180 Simcoe Street North in Oshawa, south of Taunton. Rainbow is a lower-key, relatively modern place in a strip mall. Disposable chopsticks are used, so I bring my own. Pop is AYCD and canned which is wonderful, $2 and Coke Zero is available. Ordering is old-school onto paper templates. Assorted Sashimi is available for $3, but must be a set of six pieces including octopus and mackerel so I passed. Soy sauce at table with salty but fresh and flavorful.

Miso soup was fresh, savory and excellent. Green salad was very good in a nice house Wasabi ginger dressing. Unfortunately the hot and sour soup was burnt and not very good.

Beef skewers were tender and delicious. Ginger beef was breaded which is odd, but it was tasty and I liked the sauce. Avocado cucumber roll was good. Stir-fried vegetables were good and I liked the sauce as well. Chicken teriyaki was also very good in a nice sauce. Chicken katsu was good, and the sauce was good, although the chicken itself was slightly dry. Chicken curry was very good and flavorful, and not too hot.

Crab (surimi) sushi nigiri was good and fresh, also surf clam although it was slightly gritty. Red snapper nigiri was almost certainly tilapia but was good and fresh. White tuna was almost certainly escolar and was slightly less fresh but still alright, and salmon nigiri was very fresh and good, as was tomago.

For dessert mango, vanilla, red bean, and (my favourite) ginger ice creams were all fresh and good. Banana tempura was also very good. Weekend lunch was $15.99, and while there was one item I didn’t enjoy, the rest was enjoyable and it was quite a good lunch, and a good value.
