Yong Great Wall Buffet (Chinese/Canadian)

Yong Great Wall Buffet is located at 82 King George Road in Brantford, about 100km SW of Toronto and just w. of Hamilton. We went for weekday lunch. $2 AYCD pop is available. It’s a largish place with a good selection of items, and a bright open interior with booth seating. Soy at table was salty but fresh.

Mishy said that the cheese pizza was good. Lo Mein veg noodles very good. Sushi was only one type of rolls but they were not bad. Hot and sour soup was neither hot nor sour, but was still good. Roast beef is available on lunch which is appreciated, and it was quite good considering it was in a steam tray, although Mishy noted it was a bit salty on the outside... I think that is to preserve the moisture without needing to be soaked in gravy. Broccoli was well-seasoned. Deep fried chicken wings were very good. Fried fish was good too. Spring rolls were from frozen but were still good and not stale.

Beef roll which I do not see much if ever, possibly unique to this premises, was very good to excellent... a welcome addition nicely seasoned and fresh. Stuffed potato was delicious and also well-seasoned. Egg salad was good and fresh as well. Chickpea salad was delicious with its citrus tang. Crab salad was delicious and also very well seasoned; someone here knows how to mix the spices properly. Broccoli salad was good and fresh, as was potato salad.

Black pepper chicken was tasty. Mushroom chicken didn't seem to have any chicken in it but it was absolutely delicious with a really good sauce and I was quite impressed. Chow mein was quite good and again fresh, and many places serve it less than that. The so-called buffalo wings seemed more like honey garlic, but they were very good nonetheless whatever they were. Egg drop soup was the first thing I was unimpressed with as it seemed to be a little more than egg and water and something for consistency and had hardly any flavour. Bacon was the second as though I'm appreciative it was there at all, it was dried out and hard as gravel... I had better at AlMac's. Wonton soup was different than usual but still enjoyable; the broth was yellower and differently flavoured.

For dessert, even though it is so far from Toronto, it still has the same mango, strawberry, and chocolate cake squares which are found at so many AYCEs there. Chocolate mint, cookies & cream, and bubblegum ice creams were all fresh and good and not freezer burned. Vanilla, chocolate, butterscotch and rice pudding were very good especially the rice pudding. Weekday lunch is a stellar $17.99. Sadly, Yong was cruising in ten overdrive territory due to this and only stumbled on the last few items. Value adjustment for the excellent price certainly compensates.
