Kitcho Sushi is located at 240 First St. in Collingwood, about 150km NW of Toronto. We went for weekend lunch. Pop is $1.50 canned not AYCD, but at least they have Coke Zero. Ordering is old-school onto paper templates. Kitcho has a bright peach and yellow interior which Mishy found jarring, she indicated that the seating should have been red. There is plenty of very roomy bench seating which is appreciated for tall people like us. Disposable chopsticks are used unfortunately, but we bring our own as always. Soy at table was very fresh only moderately salty and was chilled indicating it just came out of the fridge so it was being put there to preserve it which is a nice touch. Ginger is not dyed pink.
Be aware that some portions are overly large, especially for the sweet and sour stuff make sure only to order one of everything until sure. This includes some of them being misleading, for example with chicken balls, ordering one means you'll get one portion, which is several balls.
Interesting there is mango and avocado salad but no green salad. We both loved the mango salad and it was very fresh. Miso soup was very tasty, although slightly dilute, but still quite enjoyable. I was not a big fan of the wonton soup as it had very little flavour, but I guess one can always add a little salt and or soy to compensate; it also had large green leaves in it rather than the usual sliced green onions. Hot and sour soup was fresh and delicious. Mishy never eats hot and sour soup but tried it this time when I was letting it sit near the end of the meal, and said that she thought it was fantastic. Mishy loved the green dragon roll and it was very fresh and crunchy and went well with the soy sauce. Garlic beef was excellent although a little bit chewy, but the meat was of a reasonably good cut and was very well seasoned and delicious. Beef teriyaki was also very good and Mishy definitely agreed.
Mishy indicated that the sweet and sour chicken was amazing, and I will agree that it was very good. We also both loved the chicken skewers which were cooked very well and the sauce was excellent. Initially Mishy indicated that she was off chicken and didn't want to try the teriyaki, but once she did we both agreed it was excellent and not rubbery, which is very rare for her. Chicken balls were good although the sauce could have been a touch more tangy, but at least the ball was mostly chicken and less bread. Spring rolls were good, not oily, and the sauce was good. Cheese wontons were delicious and had plenty of cheese in them. Egg roll was delicious and the filing was very fresh, and it went well with the provided sauce. Chicken wings were quite good and the breading was also well done and they were well-seasoned. Gyoza were quite good and the sauce went well with them.
Salmon nigiri was excellent as the salmon was very fresh, the consistency of the rice was good and they went together well with the soy and wasabi. California roll did not have any roe but I certainly didn't miss it and it was quite good and fresh. Surf clam was actually among the best I've had, as it was really fresh and very flavourful in a way that most are not. Red snapper nigiri was possibly tilapia, but was still quite good and fresh.
For dessert, mango ice cream was delicious and full of flavour and very fresh. Vanilla was fresh as well. Green tea was understated but fresh. Chocolate ice cream was delicious and also fresh, with plenty of chocolate notes. Fried banana was excellent and the sauce complimented it well. Weekend lunch is $24.99 and even if this is a cheaper area, this was quite a good price and was a very good lunch for it.
