Wind Japanese and Thai is located at 9241 Lundy's Lane in Niagara Falls, not too far
from the touristy downtown. Wind has a stylish modern interior and
there were plenty of booth seating and other customers; it seems to
be doing well. AYCD pop is available for $2. Wind Sushi uses iPad
ordering. Unfortunately, yet another higher-end place that uses
disposable chopsticks; glad I bring my own. Soy sauce was a bit stale
and salty; I asked for low-sodium and was brought a bottle of VH, but
this is cooking and not dipping soy so I stuck with the other. Our
server asked if anyone had food allergies (which thankfully we don't)
which is a nice touch and was the second place in a week that asked
this.
Mishy
loved the wakame salad saying it was amazing. Miso soup was
excellent, savory and well-balanced. Wonton soup was good but could
have been done without the enoki mushrooms as I am not a fan and
thought that they made the broth taste weird. Spring rolls were very
good but sauce was a little generic. Pumpkin tempura was excellent
with very good dipping sauce. Thai beef skewers were fantastic, Mishy
said the best she ever had, and the Thai peanut sauce was amazingly
good.
Beef teriyaki was big chunks of delicious beef, sauce was mild
and did not overpower it, which was a nice change. Chicken teriyaki
yaki bowl (aka don) was very good. Steamed minced beef balls were
delicious, mild, excellent flavor. Green salad was excellent with
original orangey house dressing, just about the best, and very fresh.
Chicken barbecue was delicious and very lightly spiced, well-spiced
and definitely flame cooked. Chicken teriyaki was delicious and also
lightly sauced, sauce is lighter as well and not overpowering.
Mishy
loved the salmon nigiri even after initially saying she did not want
any; it was very good and fresh and with a good rice consistency.
Crab (surimi) nigiri sushi was very good. Red snapper nigiri was
excellent with the fish and perfect flavour. Avocado cucumber roll
was a bit loosely packed and was okay, avocado not at perfect
ripeness, but close enough.
Chilean
sea bass (aka Patagonia toothfish) has a very odd fishy flavor, so
was much improved with a squeeze of the lemon slice from the soft
drink and some soy sauce; it really should be served with this as it
was only for die-hards otherwise. Steamed vegetable dumpling was very
good. Mishy loved the pad Thai, again comparing it to the high-end à
la carte she has sometimes. I admit it was good but I actually
preferred the other places'; it seemed to lack the ground peanuts and lime
essence that makes it distinctive. Thai sweet basil beef was very
tasty with some heat. Scallop (surimi) tempura was good and had very
good sauce.
For
dessert, vanilla, green tea, mango, red bean, strawberry and coconut
ice creams were excellent, the red bean had that wonderful flavor
only the best have, strawberry had large pieces of fresh strawberry
and the coconut flavor was indescribably good. There were eight to
nine wait staff, which is why service was so fast. Unfortunately
there were a few flies; it was summer but most places use system to
get rid of them… won't affect my rating but it's a caveat. Weekend
lunch was $21.99. This along with the pop is at the higher cost end.
Wind was quite good as almost all items although did have a couple of
shortcomings but there was far more on the positive side, so I
consider it a good value and we had a very enjoyable lunch there.
