168 Sushi Buffet - Mississauga (Pan-Asian)

168 Sushi Buffet is located at 2366 Dundas St. W. in Mississauga, west of Erin Mills Parkway. Mishy and I went for weekend lunch there after a long bike ride west from Toronto along the Waterfront Trail. 168 has another location at Dufferin and Steeles in Vaughan (right at the Toronto border) that we have already reviewed. We went on a very busy weekend lunch; had forgotten it was Father's Day (I tend to forget since my dad died seven years ago) and thankfully 168 Sushi did not jack the price up. Disposable chopsticks and iPad menus are used. $1.95 AYCD pop is available. Soy sauce at table was very strongly flavoured but also rather salty. Like the other location, this 168 has a separate buffet area with desserts soups and salads self-serve.

Crab meat  surimi wrapped in bacon was very good because, well, bacon. Garlic bread was good and moist so was softer, not dried out. Mishy indicated the wakame salad had too much vinegar, but that the chicken skewers were nicely spiced and BBQ flavored. Beef skewer was tough but delicious. Tom yum soup was delicious and I usually don't like it, the broth was reminiscent of Campbell's vegetable. Wonton soup was good with a savoury broth, not watered-down, and had delicious wontons. Mishy liked the sweet and sour chicken balls saying that they were mostly chicken. Chicken teriyaki was fantastic, tender, well cooked and the sauce was amazing with a wonderful wine flavor, and not too sweet; Mishy also loved it. I also liked the chicken skewers though not as much as Mishy. I initially thought that the miso soup was boring as had nothing but broth with no wakame, tofu, green onions or anything else, but had failed to notice that all of these ingredients are present in the buffet area near the soups, so take care they are not missed.

Mishy loved the torched shrimp roll very much saying it was "out of this world"; I liked it as well. Hot and sour soup was excellent and delicious, with the right amount of heat, and also very fresh which is difficult to find from a self-serve tureen. Mishy loved the cheese wontons indicating there was plenty of cheese inside and it was very good; I agreed and the sauce was also excellent and not too sweet. Shrimp tempura was very light and flaky, with almost no oil, and the dipping sauce was very good and not too sweet. Mishy did not like the salt and pepper crispy chicken at all, but I didn't think it was bad, just more like homemade oven baked chicken nuggets. Crazy salmon roll was quite good and the flavor was nicely balanced.

Cajun chicken wings were delicious and very well spiced, very enjoyable. We both thought the kalbi beef ribs were among the best we have ever had, extremely well spiced and well-cooked, although they were slightly fatty but no matter. The Thai curry chicken was served with vegetables, which made it a little larger than expected, but I still liked it very much as the sauce was delicious; Mishy did not like it however. Salmon nigiri was very fresh and good and Mishy also liked it very much. We both love their beef teriyaki, Mishy so much so that she used expletives to describe it, but unfortunately I let it get cold before trying it. although it was still good. In the dim sum options, custard balls were excellent to the point we reordered twice and Mishy ate three of them. The filling was delicious. Pork shumai was very good, although I again I let it get too cold. Shrimp har gai was also delicious. Thai spicy beef was good and not too hot which was appreciated.

For dessert, we both loved the banana tempura which had a very nice sauce and was done perfectly. Mango, chocolate, red bean, green tea, vanilla  and strawberry ice creams were all fresh and good. From the self-serve desserts, the mango, chocolate and strawberry puddings were all delicious. I tried a self-serve slushie with strawberry balls, green apple and mango syrup, and although much too sweet it was delicious. Service was fantastic, friendly and very fast in an extremely busy environment so kudos to the staff. Weekend lunch was $21.95 . (Be aware that 168 does not accept debit, and there is no ATM on premises... bring cash or a credit card.) We had an excellent and very enjoyable lunch with nothing that I didn't enjoy, and would happily return.
