Taka Sushi (Japanese)

Taka Sushi is located at 340 Eagle Street West in Newmarket, just west of Yonge St. and Davis Drive. We went for weekend lunch. Pop is $1.50 canned, not AYCD. Disposable chopsticks are used unfortunately, so I bring my own. Ordering is old school onto paper templates. Soy at table was all green lid low-sodium and was fresh. Taka has smaller casual bench and booth seating with a brighter interior.







 

Miso soup was very good with plenty of umami. Mishy loved the wakame salad saying it was very well-seasoned. Green salad was quite good in house orange-ginger dressing.


Spicy beef was delicious with not excessive heat and plenty of flavor. Shrimp tempura was very good, light, flaky and the dipping sauce was quite good as well. Chicken teriyaki was excellent, chicken moist, tender and well-done, and the sauce was delicious; we both loved it. Chicken skewers were tasty but a bit dry, however they livened up when dipped in the teriyaki sauce. Beef teriyaki was with shredded beef and was tasty. Vegetable gyoza were quite tasty and nicely crunchy. Chicken katsu cutlet was very good and I enjoyed the sauce. For the dim sum options, steamed pork bun was quite tasty, although slightly dry, but not enough to matter. Har gow shrimp dumplings were delicious; there was no sauce but it wasn't really required. Pork shiu mai was very good to excellent, with plenty of savour.


Salmon nigiri was fresh and good, as was crab nigiri although it was definitely surimi. Likewise  butterfish was definitely  escolar and red snapper was tilapia, but they were both very fresh and good  and enjoyable. Philadelphia roll was delicious with a generous allotment of cream cheese and we both loved it. Tomago nigiri was good with a large portion of egg. Green Dragon Roll was good.


The only two downsides were that the General Tso's chicken was too doughy, so it was more like General Dough's chicken (that was Mishy's by the way) and the sauce was too sweet. Broccoli tempura was slightly overdone.


For dessert, vanilla, red bean and mango ice creams all were fresh and good, as was banana tempura and tempura vanilla ice cream. While not over-the-top, and with a couple minor shortcomings, it was a good lunch for a not-too-expensive price of $17.99, and we did enjoy it.
