1298 Sushi is located at 1298 Kingston Road in Pickering, near Liverpool. 1298 unfortunately uses disposable chopsticks which I did not bring my own for so had to use. iPad menus are used which is always welcome. Ginger is not dyed pink. AYCD pop is included in the price, which is awesome. We went for weekend lunch.
Spicy crab salad was very good, with strips of surimi, tempura crumble and a spicy sauce. Green salad had Thousand Islands Dressing, but it was good so I did not mind. Miso soup was excellent and savory. Mishy said that the wakame salad was good, about the same as other places.
1298 has brown rice maki which I have seen only at a couple of other places. Brown rice salmon avocado and California rolls were quite good, although the hue of the rice made it seem like it was colored white rice rather than actual brown rice. We both liked the torched nigiri sushi very much and always good that it is available. Red snapper nigiri is tilapia, but was good and fresh. Butterfish nigiri was also fresh and good, so was surimi crab and salmon nigiri. Salmon Rose (which is Mishy's favorite and a reason in itself for her to go to a place) was excellent.
Beef teriyaki was very good, with shredded beef in plenty of sauce, we both enjoyed it very much. We also enjoy the barbecue beef ribs very much, as they had a very good flavor. Enoki beef roll was excellent, with plenty of savour, and not much enoki flavor which is a welcome change; we both loved it. Chicken teriyaki was good, slightly crisp, and the sauce was not too sweet. Chili chicken, a welcome Hakka addition that I wish more places had, was very good. Sweet potato fries were very good with a spicy sauce and we both enjoyed it. Shrimp tempura was very light and flaky and good, and the dipping sauce was very good. Sweet custard bun was excellent, we both love them and enjoyed seconds. Both of us loved the thin triangular cheese wontons, and the sauce was good. We both liked the General Tao chicken a lot.
For dessert, chocolate ice cream was unfortunately slightly freezer burned but not bad. Green tea vanilla and red bean ice cream were fresh and good. Crème brûlée is available, but it is called caramel pudding. Fried milk was good. Banana tempura was very good. Service was extremely fast, sometimes almost too good as the waitresses seemed to never leave our table! Weekend lunch is $16.99. With only a mild shortcoming or two, this was a very good price and value for a very good lunch, especially with the included pop and the presence of torched nigiri and salmon rose. We would very happily return!
