Sushi T&T (Japanese)

Sushi T&T is located at 25 Harwood Dr. in Ajax, the municipality two east of Toronto, close to Hwy. 401. (Note that the premise’s sign has the name as “TnT” but this isn’t reflected anywhere else.) iPad menus are used and for the first time had a tech. issue with one, it kept freezing; eventually it woke up and was fine. Soy at table was a bit salty but fresh and good. I liked the water carafe included. Pop is canned at $1.99. Green tea is free, also available from the iPad menu, and was very good. Reusable chopsticks are used which is always a welcome addition. Ginger is dyed pink. We went for weekend lunch.

Mishy loved the seaweed salad, saying it was amazing. Miso soup was fantastic, rich, savory with plenty of dashi umami. Mishy didn't like the green salad dressing saying it reminded too much of Thousand Islands, but I thought it was good and more like mayonnaise. We both thought the spring rolls were among the best we have had; they were super-fresh, flavourful and the sauce wasn't too sweet. Beef teriyaki was so good that Mishy went all limp and said that it was the best she had ever had; I agree that it was extremely good although I will not go that far just because we have had so much it's hard to remember. The sauce was probably among the best I have enjoyed, with strong wine notes and very well-balanced flavours.

Cheese wontons were very good with plenty of cheese, and the sauce was not overly sweet. Chicken katsu was fantastic, thickly-made rather than the flatter and less flavourful type at many other places, and with sauce and gravy topping which completed it. Shrimp tempura was delicious and excellent, crispy, light flaky and not oily, the sauce was excellent. Cold tofu had the most intensely flavourful sauce probably due to ginger, as did the gyoza which were just about perfect, not oily, flavorful and the sauce was excellent.

Crab surimi nigiri was very good and fresh. Salmon nigiri was excellent, very fresh. Red snapper tilapia was similarly good. Spicy salmon sushi was nigiri with sauce and tempura crumble topping, not rolled in wakame as everywhere else, but still very good due to the sauce. Tofu skin tempura was excellent with a nice citrus flavour in the wrap.

For dessert there is only ice cream. Chocolate was delicious with bitter notes, green tea was excellent and very fresh, vanilla was excellent and French-style, red bean was excellent and as I expected with the quality of the offerings thus far, it did have the rare and mysterious flavour only the best have, mango was among the best I have ever had. Weekend lunch was $25.99 which I normally would find expensive for “the basics” that Sushi T&T offers, but they are all very good and several were among the best anywhere (Service was good too!) So the rating won’t take much of a hit for the pricing. Mishy and I loved it and we’d happily return.
