KK Sushi is located at 5130 Dixie Rd. near Eglinton, in Mississauga, the municipality on Toronto's west end. It's advertised as Halal which is uncommon for a sushi place, but the only item conspicuously absent was pork katsu aka tonkatsu... there’s chicken katsu of course, so I didn’t miss anything. Ordering is old school with paper menu templates. Disposable chopsticks are used unfortunately, but as always we brought our own. Free Wi-Fi is available. KK has a darker contemporary interior with booths. Pop not AYCD, but is only $1.50 can which is better than most other places. Soy at table was tangy and not too salty.
Hot and sour soup was delicious, and not too hot nor burnt at all which is good as this too easily happens. Mishy unfortunately said that the miso soup was very bland even with soy sauce added, and I agree that it needed a little more dashi for umami. Wonton soup had a flavor similar to Lipton's chicken noodle in the broth, but I love Lipton's so I enjoyed it.
Beef teriyaki was alright, but given the atmosphere was expecting more along the lines of barbecued chunks of steak, instead of little thin strips and a very small portion. My second order I asked for well done instead of rare, and they were much better, also larger and thicker pieces. Mishy commented that the chicken teriyaki was bland, but I found that this was because the sauce was not on them and it had to be rubbed in it, and then they were fantastic. The beef short ribs Mishy liked even though she usually does not eat them, and I soon found out that this was because they were just about the best I have ever had, not only moist and flavorful but with very good kalbi spicing.
KK has sashimi on lunch which is excellent (though expected for the price!) Smoked salmon nigiri very good and wish more places had it. We both liked the green dragon roll. Tamago sashimi was quite good, as well as butterfish and white tuna and crab aka surimi. Red snapper was very good and fresh as well as shrimp sashimi. The first two salmon sashimi were OK, but then they became excellent, and we were able to order 16 pieces between us which is excellent for lunch. Philadelphia roll was quite good though Mishy described it as average.
Satay beef and chicken skewers were delicious and well-spiced. Beef ramen soup was delicious with an understated slightly tangy flavor which was well seasoned.
For dessert, banana tempura was very good and nicely hot with nice rich chocolate sauce. Green tea ice cream was very fresh, mango was excellent with strong bold flavours, vanilla was delicious, and red bean good though lacking the rare flavor. Mousse cakes raspberry, mango and mocha were the same variety found in so many other AYCEs in the Toronto area and were fresh. Weekend lunch price was $27.99 but with the included sashimi, the area (Mississauga can be pricey) and the reasonable $1.50 pop, this is actually quite good.
