Gyubee Japanese BBQ - Scarborough

Gyubee Japanese Grill’s new location is at 3720 Midland Ave., at McNicoll in Scarborough, in Toronto’s northeast. It’s very large and was full of patrons, but we did not have to wait at all. All tables are cordoned off for safety. There is a 1 hour 25 minute dining limit, so beware (I use a stopwatch on my smartphone). AYCD pop is available for $3, tea is $1 with free topup. Tea was excellent in flavor and strength. As with other Gyubee locations, patrons grill meats and other items on inset gas-fired table grills, and orders are given directly to wait staff who electronically record them. Soy at table sweet was rich and seasoned and excellent. Disposable chopsticks are used unfortunately, but we have our own as always. We went for weekend lunch.

Miso soup was phenomenal, as with the other Gyubee locations, full of umami and among the strongest and most flavorful I have ever had. Cabbage salad had a little less sauce than the other Gyubee locations, but it was still very enjoyable. Cold tofu’s sauce was excellent, better than I have had before.  Ssamjang green sauce was quite good and I enjoyed its indescribable, planty mix of flavors. Mishy loved the thinly sliced sweet soy marinated short rib, and beef brisket the best, which I did not expect. Thick-cut pork belly (aka bacon) is excellent and a new addition. The other meats (sausage, chicken, shrimp, etc.) were of similar consistent and excellent quality with the other Gyubees. We ended up having multiple seconds and thirds of all of the meats.

For dessert, as with the other Gyubees, one Melona bar is provided. It’s $27.99 for lunch on weekends, and there is an included 12% service charge which covers as a tip. Considering the price at rodizios, this is still a a good value and Gyubee remains among the best of the grillhouses.
