Update 2019-Nov.-30 - Very unfortunately, when I called Sen today for a return visit, I was advise that they were closed and sold months ago. Sadly it was probably too good of a value.
Sen Sushi is located at 2338 Major Mackenzie in Maple, between Keele and Jane Sts. There's also a Newmarket location we'll be trying sometime. We went for weekend lunch. Sen has a very nice rustic interior, appearing like the exterior of an old street with entry doors, window frames and street lamps. It was very quiet when we were there even with about eight other customers. Soy sauce at table was only slightly salty and green-lid low-sodium. Unfortunately disposable chopsticks are used, but I brought my own as always. Pop is canned $1.50 not AYCD.
Miso soup was very savoury and well balanced, and both of us loved it. Green salad excellent, both of us loved it too; cucumbers were very fresh and it had an excellent custom house dressing.
Salmon nigiri was excellent, fresh, and good rice. White tuna nigiri was almost certainly escolar but was still very good. Red snapper was almost certainly tilapia but also was very good and fresh. Spicy salmon maki roll was delicious, Mishy however found it very hot but I did not. Avocado cucumber roll very good with the avocado at perfect freshness. Crab stick nigiri also was very good at with high freshness. Red dragon Maki roll (shrimp tempura, salmon, avocado, cucumber) was good.
Mishy tried the salmon teriyaki as did I, the sauce was good and it was well-cooked; the portion size is very small but you can always just order more. Beef teriyaki was sufficiently good, Mishy said it reminded her of Hallowe'en candy because of the molasses, but we were grateful it was present at all. Chicken teriyaki was good and I liked that the sauce was not too sweet. Bean curd nigiri was delicious and I enjoyed it very much. Egg nigiri was delicious and was in a cute canoe shape. Both of us loved the Philadelphia roll which was delicious and was served warm. We also loved the onion rings, crispy and the sauce was good. Deep fried tofu was very tasty but watch out as it is quite hot, and just poking holes in it with chopsticks was not sufficient. Surimi scallop was very good in a nice sauce. Gyoza dumplings and spring rolls were both very good, tasty and I liked the sauce. Chicken curry with rice is very good with a mild curry flavor. Stir-fried bean sprouts were quite good, and healthy and fresh. We livened them with a dash of soy sauce and they were even better. Beef udon soup very good and even Mishy enjoyed it... savoury and nice flavour.
For dessert, ice cream is not on the menu but it is still available for the asking: green tea, red beans, mango and vanilla. Mishy loved the green tea ice cream and mango, and said it was very creamy. Banana tempura was very good and we both enjoyed it, not overdone and just the right amount of chocolate sauce. And now the amazing part: Weekend lunch was $12.99! There wasn't one bad item in the meal, in fact all of it was quite good. We were very impressed that this level of quality could be delivered at such a low cost, and no other rating than our highest would suffice.
