Yakiniku Legend (Japanese)

Yakiniku Legend is located at 35 McCaul near University and Queen in Toronto's core, near the Osgoode subway station. It seems to be a very new place and was quite busy. $3 AYCD pop is available. Yakiniku features pressed sushi, and also some sushi rolls in addition to the BBQ fare. As with most barbecues, happily reusable chopsticks are used. Soy-based sauce at table was sweet but very flavourful and excellent. There is also what seems like barbecue sauce which was delicious. Spice sprinkle is quite good but has a bit of heat. Drinks are served in mugs with handles which is pretty rare.

Bean sprouts were delicious with nice subtle umami spicing. Mishy absolutely love the pressed sushi aka oshizushi and could not get enough of it; she prefers sweeter stuff, and it does have some sweetness but it was delicious with a bit of mustard hint. Cold tofu was very good with a very good sauce. Mishy loved the salad dressing and I did too; It seems to be an original made on premise and is creamy and wonderful.

Finally on to the barbecue, the kalbi beef in square strips was fantastic and really tasted like steak with that smokey savour. Thin-cut pork belly aka bacon was very good. Mishy loved the gyoza which were crisp and fresh and had absolutely no staleness of defrost to them, so may be made-on-premises and were probably in the top three best gyoza we've ever had. Chicken thigh’s seasoning was probably the best I've ever had and I ended up ordering seconds just to get more of it. Even the spring rolls were excellent, full flavour, not stale or with a defrosted flavour. We both loved the kimchi as it was delicious and not excessively hot. Mushrooms were very good from the grill. Sausages as expected are Chinese-style, not too sweet and was excellent. Pickled cucumbers are reminiscent of bread-and-butter pickles but Japan-styled. Chicken wings were excellent I think in the same sauce as the thighs, although it seemed a little spicier.

Bibimbap was excellent with a wine-like flavour to the sauce, and both of us loved it; it also wasn't excessively hot, but with only a persistent warmth. Beef ramen with excellent with a delicious original cloudy broth with plenty of flavour and savour, not like usual packaged ramen. Miso soup, which unfortunately I left a bit too long and it was cool, was still fantastic... savoury with plenty of dashi and not watered down at all.

For dessert there was only vanilla soft-serve ice cream and coffee pudding, but I'm happy that there is any dessert at all and that it is not limited like the Melona bars at so many BBQ places are. The ice cream really seemed to be cream and not milk, as was very creamy and rich, and I also loved the coffee pudding... for a real treat mix both together. The service was excellent and very friendly and also fast and we never had to wait very long for an order so if there is a time limit it didn't affect it and we both left very satisfied. It was $30.99 weekend lunch which is about usual. Everything was perfect and it appears that Gyubee, our gold standard for price/quality ratio has been surpassed. Almost everything at Yakiniku was excellent, quite a few best-of-breed and nothing even mediocre. It’s a natural perfect without any value adjustments required.
