Dosa Boyz/Hakka Boyz is located at 35 William Kitchen Rd. in Toronto, more precisely Scarborough, Toronto's eastern borough, in the Kennedy Commons mall at Kennedy Rd. and Hwy. 401. Unlike just about all Indian AYCE's it's a sit-down like the sushi places, not a serve-yourself buffet, though there is a buffet here but it appears only used for food storage. Has a bright and colorful new interior with plenty of booth seating. The offering is a “banana leaf feast” which as may be guessed is served on a banana leaf rather than a plate, which is traditionally Indian. Like Japanese omekase, dishes are served in the order the house determines and a little of everything; the diner can always ask for more if desired.
The meal starts with rasna, a fruit drink, and on the palm leaf are placed salt, chili sauce, mango chutney, and a roasted chili pepper for seasoning everything else. Midway through the meal was also a buttermilk spiced (but not sweet) drink, which considering wasn't bad... better than I expected! The sauces were all excellent especially the peanut and chili sauce, which was not excessively hot. However watch out for the tomato curry sauce which is as hot as vindaloo and probably is the same sauce used in that.
Murabba was Mishy's favourite bread and she even asked for another helping of it. Chicken stir fry was delicious and with beautiful spicing... I ended up having three helpings. Veg. potato and peas excellent and quite spicy but not too hot and the seasoning was a nice balance and delicious. Chicken curry was beautifully seasoned, but unfortunately had many bones in it. Egg masala was excellent, with half a boiled egg, and the masala base was delicious and well-seasoned and not overly hot. Mutton curry was good, but only as the seasoning killed most of the gamey flavor of the mutton which I am not big on.
Chicken biryani was quite good with very good seasoning including large pieces of raw spices. White rice is just that... unseasoned white rice, although when requested curry sauce will be added to it which of course gives it some flavour.
For dessert there is a yogurt dish I didn’t get the name of, vanilla ice cream and also they brought a gulab jamun ball which were all good. Cost is $21.99 for veg. and $24.99 non-veg. editions. Can’t get much more authentic than this, it was excellent and the price is quite good compared to other places these days, especially with the included drinks.
