Hi Sushi is located at 561 Hespeler in Cambridge, approx. 100km SW of Toronto. It's conveniently close to the GO bus stop at Pinebush so can be considered transit-accessible. Disposable chopsticks are used unfortunately, so we brought our own as always. AYCD pop is $3. Soy at table is fresh and flavorful, although a bit salty. Ginger is dyed pink.
Miso soup was very good, savory, delicious and not dilute. Hot and sour soup was not strongly flavored, but at least it was fresh and unburnt. Mishy said that the wakame salad was awesome. Green salad was very fresh and the dressing wasn't bad, although it was a variation of Thousand Islands. We both loved the green dragon vegetable roll as it was very fresh and the avocado really made it. Wonton soup had a dark, rich and interesting broth, but was unfortunately spoiled by being slightly burnt.
Korean spicy beef and chicken we also both loved and they certainly were spicy, but delicious. Beef teriyaki was very good, not too tough and the sauce was good. Mishy didn't like the beef short ribs saying they had a gamey flavor, but if there was one it was very mild, and I didn't mind them. General Tao had no heat, but the sauce wasn't overly sweet so was good. Sweet and sour chicken was delicious and both of us loved it, as well as the lemon chicken which is Mishy's favourite. Chicken teriyaki wasn't smoky enough, but I liked it and the sauce was good. Tempura was very good; although had a bit of oil it was light and flaky and the sauce was delicious..
The cheese wontons were packed with delicious cheese, and Mishy actually said that they were not only the best cheese wontons, but the best anything she ever had at an AYCE, at least until our next outing! Deep fried scallops were very good as the sauce was delicious. Beef gyoza were quite good although Mishy didn’t like the sauce.
Hi Sushi’s menu has honest names for the fish, with tilapia and escolar rather than red snapper and butterfish; this may be required by the local health authority. Salmon nigiri was excellent, with very good rice consistency that did not fall apart and the salmon was very fresh. Tilapia nigiri had a strange flavor and consistency which was unlike red snapper elsewhere; I don't know if it was freezer burned or going off. Happily the escolar nigiri made up for it as it was very fresh and very good.
For dessert, the raspberry, mocha and mango mousse cakes are the same ones that are in all AYCEs all over Ontario. They were excellent and very fresh. Strawberry ice cream was fantastic and extremely fresh with no freezer burn. Mango was similarly excellent and had an amazingly good flavor. Chocolate ice cream was fantastically creamy and chocolatey with perfect bitter notes. Fried milk was excellent and had delicious chocolate sauce. Green tea and french vanilla ice cream were both fantastically good and creamy as well. The ice creams here were among the best I've ever had at an AYCE.
Fried banana was quite good though a bit crunchy. Mango pudding and mango yogurt were both very good. Weekend lunch $24.99; there is a cash discount, with an ATM onsite for a $2.75 fee, so it is better to pay cash from it and they don't take debit, only credit cards. Even with the $3 AYCD pop, with the cash discount this was quite reasonable. To be sure there were some minor shortcomings but it was still a very good and enjoyable lunch, especially the desserts!
