Tokyo Maki Sushi (Japanese)

Tokyo Maki is located at 2 Bartley Bull Pkwy. in Brampton, the municipality to Toronto’s northwest. It’s directly across from the Brampton Shoppers World mall, so is transit-accessible. Disposable chopsticks are used unfortunately, but we brought our own as always. Tokyo Maki has a warmer wooden interior, and iPad menus are used.  AYCD Pop is included the lunch price! I had green tea which was very strong and loved it.  Soy at table was green lid “Low-sodium” but still salty and not much else, but not too bad.

Mishy didn't like the seaweed salad saying was too salty. Miso was dilute. Green salad was good with a nice house dressing though also a bit sweet but not enough to matter. Chicken teriyaki chicken was alright but the sauce was nondescript. General Tao chicken good, but could be spicier but Mishy said the best of the hot dishes. Beef teriyaki was tender, missing savour, with a nondescript mild gravy-like flavour sauce. Beef gyoza were good, though no sauce. Chicken skewers/yakitori had delicious spicing, rather like a sweet Five Spice; it was enjoyable enough that we had seconds. Chili chicken was dry but still flavorful. Beef short rib were a bit oily and gristly but still tasty. Shrimp tempura was good, as was the sauce.

Cheese wontons were triangular pockets and we both loved them and there was plenty of cheese. Chicken breaded wings were in another nondescript sweet sauce, but not bad. Tomkatsu was good, and the sauce not overpoweringly seasoned.

Salmon rose, our favorite, was very good, fresh and flavorful and appreciated on the lunch menu. Red snapper/tilapia and butterfish/escolar nigiri were also very fresh and very good. Philadelphia roll was very good with a nice balance of flavors and fresh. Tokyo Maki has numerous brown rice rolls; the California was enjoyable. Crab meat aka surimi roll was very good and better than expected; it was accidentally ordered.

For dessert, mocha and mango cake is same variety as found at many other AYCEs. Mango yogurt was quite good. Tempura banana had no sauce and I would say missed it; was better with ice cream added. Ice creams Mishy noted were all fresh and creamy indicating a good freezer. Chocolate ice cream I found excellent and rich, green tea and mango ice creams were good, red bean was good but missing that elusive flavour. Weekend lunch was $23.99. While most of the items were okay, the presence of included AYCD pop and salmon rose was a plus, and there were several items that were good enough that it was an enjoyable lunch.
