Sunrise Chinese Buffet

(Note: this was written in Feb. of 2020, just before everything was locked down due to the COVID-19 pandemic; it’s being published now as the location is confirmed to be reopened.)

Sunrise Chinese Buffet is located at 431 Kent St. Lindsay. It’s a smaller place and buffet but has sufficient selection. Nice classical music was playing on our visit and I liked the ambiance. AYCD pop is available for $2. We went for weekend dinner.

We both thought the cheese wontons were among the best we ever had as they were almost all cheese filling rather than air. Lemon chicken was very good. Singapore chicken was quite good even with nothing on it as had a trace of lemon sauce. Chicken wings were good and fresh, not dried out. Chicken balls were almost all chicken instead of breading, though the breading could have been a little more flavorful. Spring rolls were a bit freezer burned. Egg roll was good and flavorful.

Sadly the hot and sour soup was terrible with a strong metallic flavor probably from being in a metallic steam tray rather than a proper tureen; it doesn’t stay fresh long even under ideal conditions. Wonton soup was somewhat better but still had an odd broth with a beery flavor and soggy wontons. Golden rice was alright but had a sweet flavor that did not belong. Honey garlic wings were good. Sweet and sour chicken was a bit too sweet but not bad, although Mishy differed.

Sesame chicken was better as was only mildly sweet. Black pepper beef was tough but quite tasty although peppery. Fries were good, crispy without being dried out. Chop suey was quite tasty and fresh with enough savoriness. Mixed vegetables were mostly broccoli and were alright but needed a little more expressive sauce. Mushrooms were delicious as the sauce was quite good. Egg foo yung was good.

For dessert, strawberry, blueberry cream and chocolate ice cream was good although the strawberry was a little freezer burned. Coconut macaroons were excellent, moist and flavorful and appeared made on premises. Cream puff was not bad but a bit stale. Coconut sponge cake square was good as was chocolate cake square. Weekend dinner price is currently (as of publication) $18.99 which is quite reasonable. There were certainly a few shortcomings but all in all was enjoyable and thus a reasonable value.

Rating: 7-7.5/10
