New Generation Sushi is located at 486 Bloor. St. W. in Toronto, just east of Bathurst subway station so is very transit-accessible. Decor is relatively low key and modernist. Chopsticks are reusable, low sodium and regular soy sauce is present at all tables. Ginger is not dyed pink. The low sodium soy sauce was very fresh and quality and not salty. Beware that the same price as charged all day, the so-called "All You Can Taste" menu is $25.95 weekdays and $27.95 weekends even on lunch. Of course this being the case, sashimi is included on "lunch."
Mishy said that the wakame salad was very good. The miso soup was extremely good, with high amounts of umami and savour and was very rich. I did not like the spicy Thai soup, although I think it was more of a case of personal preference than the actual flavor. Gyoza were okay and the sauce was good, but they seemed they were slightly stale to me, however Mishy disagreed. Spring rolls were good and the sauce was tangy enough.
Salmon sashimi was very fresh. Butterfish sashimi was very white so was probably escolar but was very good nonetheless. Torikatsu AKA chicken katsu was a bit dry, and the sauce was not the best but it still was good. Steak teriyaki was okay but seem to be a cheaper cut without much flavor; there was gristle in one piece and the sauce was alright. Salmon nigiri also was extremely fresh; the salmon in it and the sashimi were possibly the freshest I've had in a long time. Tuna nigiri was also very fresh and it was red tuna. Asparagus beef maki was delicious, asparagus wrapped in beef was an excellent flavor combination.
Shrimp tempura was extremely light and Flaky, without a trace of oil, some of the lightest and flakiest I've ever had. The dipping sauce was excellent as it was not too sweet, and had plenty of flavour. Also tried broccoli and yam and zucchini tempura; I didn't like the zucchini but I hardly ever do. The broccoli tempura was very good. Mishy loved the pad Thai saying that it was very good with its sauce as it was not overpowering. Golden curry chicken was delicious and Mishy also loved it.
Chocolate, mango and red bean ice creams (substituting green tea) were the only desserts. All were fresh and good but not exemplary. Service was good and fast. Although most items were excellent, there were a couple of shortcomings, especially the lacklustre steak teriyaki. Other AYCEs, especially recently, are able to provide a similar quality level for a significantly lower price.
