Pennies is a bar and eatery located in Toronto’s west core at 127 Strachan Ave., midway between Bathurst and Dufferin south of Queen St. W. On Wednesdays they serve AYCE sliders and tater tots. It’s required to reserve first and I suggest to read all the details. The lighting at our table was red and I needed to adjust the colour balance of all the photos there.

The sliders are veggie or beef. One drink order is required; we opted for Diet Pepsi although it tasted like it was either Pepsi Zero or had sugar in it.... or perhaps Diet Pepsi’s formulation has been finally improved. As to be expected with a bar that is quite busy, the servers are constantly distracted with larger à la carte tables that they will always give priority, so I would suggest to start a timer when the food first arrives to ensure you’re getting your two-hour allotment, if required. We only needed just over half of that.
Mishy said “Wow” to the tater tots... they were actually delicious with a very nicely seasoned coating, better than the usual bagged/frozen. The meaty cheeseburger slider was excellent, with a moist flame-grilled patty, very nicely seasoned, flavourful processed cheese, pickles and onions. The cayenne pepper sauce is about the same strength as Tabasco, and is probably a local brand. Unfortunately Mishy was not impressed with the burgers, saying that they were similar to drive-through burgers from the 1970s, but she did manage to finish them. I had no issue with them and happily ordered seconds and thirds.
I actually preferred the veggie burgers as they were even more savoury, and I think the chef puts more pickles and cheese on them to compensate for the lack of meat. The AYCE option is $17.99 and even with a rather monotonic menu this is an excellent price for anything on the dinner hour these days. The drinks were also not overpriced. I did manage to fill up well within the timeframe so left satisfied. Because price is factored into the rating and it’s over $10 less than any other AYCE dinner option in the GTA, Pennies ends up with a very good outcome.
Rating: 9 - 9.5 / 10
