Shogi Sushi is located at 9041 Jane St. in Maple, part of Vaughan which borders Toronto's northwest. Shogi has a very modern interior with a nice ceiling and hanging shelves at the sushi bar. Disposable chopsticks are used unfortunately, so we bring our own as always. AYCD pop is $1.85. All soy at table is green lid low-sodium, and was very fresh, sweet, and not salty... delicious. Wasabi tasted and had the consistency of the real thing rather than horseradish. We went for the weekend all-day dinner (there is no lunch menu.) Ordering is old-school onto paper templates.
Miso soup had that "Javex" flavor Mishy loves, but there was enough of it that I did not love it; it was also dilute. Green salad house dressing was good but plain, though that it was original compensated for the lack of other than lettuce.
Beef skewers/gyu kushiyaki, although not spicy, were fantastic due to the savour and tenderness of the beef. Beef teriyaki was also made with the same fantastic beef and the sauce was also quite good. Chicken teriyaki was similarly delicious with tender chicken. Spicy chicken I think was just chicken teriyaki with hot sauce on it, and it was good, but too hot. Gyoza were excellent and reminiscent of garlic bread.
Yam tempura was quite good, though a bit oily, with good dipping sauce. Shrimp tempura were very good; fresh, light and flaky. Hibachi chicken was very good also in teriyaki sauce. Beef short ribs were excellent and delicious; very well-spiced. Chicken yakitori was unbreaded very white chicken breast, good quality and a nice sauce. Beef udon soup was good though rather standard.
Salmon nigiri were delicious and full of flavour, very fresh and delicious. Red tuna nigiri were also very good and fresh and flavorful. Salmon sashimi was very good and fresh, but I ordered 8 pieces and got 2. The other sashimi were also short-changed. Butterfish was probably real butterfish as was lighter and less oily than the usual tilapia, but it was a very small piece so I am unsure. Red snapper sashimi was also very fresh and delicious. Canadian clam was also good. I realized that the soy sauce used here was adding to the flavour more so than just about any I have tried before; it had a rich bitterness to it. Philly roll was excellent with plenty of cream cheese and excellent balance.
For dessert, banana tempura was delicious with chocolate sauce. Mango ice cream was delicious and without any freezer burn. Red bean ice cream had that wonderful flavor I love so was delicious, but not as much as it could have been as it was freezer-burned. Green tea ice cream was fresh and not freezer-burned, though the flavor was a bit muted. Weekend all-day dinner is currently $27.99. This isn't bad with the beef dishes and included sashimi, the AYCD pop is reasonably priced and it was a good dinner with the features being very good, though there were some shortcomings in other areas.
