Sushi Whitby (formerly Shogun Sushi) is located at 80 Thickson Road S. (which has a Hwy. 401 exit) in Whitby, the municipality three east of Toronto, at the intersection with Dundas. It is very close to (just south) of Sushi Mountain. Sushi Whitby has a bright modern interior. Disposable chopsticks are used unfortunately, so we bring our own as always. AYCD canned food pop is available for $1.95. Low sodium soy sauce is available on request, although it was not the freshest but still alright and less salty. Ginger is not dyed pink.
Green salad had a house orangey sweet dressing that was enjoyable and fresh. Miso soup was excellent darker and delicious savory. Hot and sour soup had a tomatoey broth and was quite good. Mishy said the seaweed salad was very fresh and light and loved it. Spring rolls were quite good, flaky and not oily with a tangy sauce. Cheese wontons also good in the same dipping sauce.
Chicken teriyaki was very good and we both loved it. Shrimp tempura was very good, light and flaky, and the dipping sauce was delicious. General Tso chicken was a little like sweet-and-sour with heat and was quite tasty. Short ribs were very good and not over seasoned. Beef udon soup was savoury and quite good. Some pricier items (ie beef teriyaki or cubes, and salmon rose) were noticeably not present but what was there was good enough they were not missed excessively.
Salmon nigiri was very good and fresh, rice with good consistency that didn't fall apart as Mishy noted. Surf clam was also quite good and fresh as was crab surimi. Butterfish aka escolar was excellent. California roll was very good and fresh as well.
For dessert, banana tempura was good though the banana was a touch green. Mango ice cream was very good, as was green tea which was very fresh, red bean was good although did not have the rare flavor I love, and thankfully my favorite flavor ginger was available, for which I needed seconds. All the ice creams were free of freezer burn. Service was fast and friendly and food arrived almost as soon as it was ordered. Lunch was $19.99 and with times, and the reasonable price for canned pop, this is quite good, and we certainly enjoyed our lunch.
