Sushi Today is located at 1801 Dundas St. E. in Whitby, n. of Hwy. 401, w. of Thickson. Sushi Today has a modern interior, somewhat louder than average, and there were plenty of customers. We went for weekend lunch. AYCD pop is included which is awesome. Soy at table was salty, but low sodium is available on request and it was much improved. Reusable chopsticks are used, thankfully, as well as iPad menus.
Miso soup was good and savory but slightly dilute. Mishy liked the wakame salad although she said it could have used a bit more zip. Green salad was fresh but had Thousand Islands dressing, although it was good. Seafood skewer was nicely spicy. BBQ beef short ribs were delicious and we both loved them. Grilled salmon belly was good in a nice sauce. Shrimp and yam tempura were good, light and flaky enough, and the sauce was good too. Mishy said the chicken teriyaki was boring as well, but I disagreed and I enjoyed it with its somewhat gravy-like sauce which had enough flavor. Gyoza were good and I liked the sauce. Chicken curry was very good, with plenty of spice, although the sauce was slightly too sweet for my liking.
On the downside, Mishy indicated that the spring rolls were boring; I agree but they weren't that bad, pretty much like at most other places. We did not like the beef teriyaki, the sauce was not good with little teriyaki flavor, and the texture of the beef with strange, rather fatty and unappetizing. I did not care for the pork shumai either, it had a strange flavor and was missing some savour. As well there were bits of black material on top that we could not identify.
Mishy loved the salmon rose, this is her favorite dish and I loved it too... so much salmon. Crab surimi nigiri was good and fresh, inari as well, red snapper nigiri was definitely tilapia, slightly off of perfectly fresh but good nonetheless, tomago was similar, butterfish was definitely escolar but was fresher as was surf clam.
For dessert, Mishy loved the chocolate ice cream and caramel pudding, which looked like creme brulee. Chocolate, vanilla, mango, red bean and green tea ice creams were all fresh and good. Fried milk was delicious. Banana tempura was nice but unfortunately had no sauce. Weekend lunch was $16.99, and although there were some sub-optimal dishes it was still a an enjoyable lunch and the price was quite good especially with the included AYCD pop.
