NO LONGER AYCE - Mayur Fine Indian Cuisine

Update: 2021-Aug-20 - There is currently no buffet/AYCE at this location post-lockdown even though it is now permitted, and it is unknown if and when it will ever return. I am therefore removing it from the active list, and will follow up periodically and restore it should it return to AYCE status.

Mayur Fine Indian Cuisine is located at 80 Ellesmere Road in Scarborough, just west of Pharmacy Ave. Mayur has a nice new interior, and although did not have many customers when I went there I (only about five others) happily more arrived until there was about a dozen. I went for weekday lunch. Pop is $2.25 per can, not AYCD but at least there is Coke Zero which is appreciated.

Naan bread warm and was reasonably fresh, only slightly dry, and was good. Fish pakora was good and I would have enjoyed the seasoning, but there was a little too much salt. Chicken tandoori appeared as though it would be dried out, but was actually quite good and moist, though slightly stale. Butter chicken was good with a rich sauce that was not overly sweet. Saag paneer was good. Aloo gobi included broccoli was a nice touch and it was tasty.

Mixed vegetables were good but also slightly on the stale side. Vegetable pakoras were good, and not dried out, but quite moist. Spring rolls were okay, but a bit bland; I noticed almost all Indian places now have these. Samosas were very good and I liked the seasoning a lot. Chana masala had an interesting seasoning that grew on me until I decided it was excellent. Dal tarka was also very good and well spiced. Green and vegetable salads were quite good with the mint and yogurt dressings.

For dessert, chocolate, mango and vanilla ice cream were good, although vanilla was slightly freezer burned. Gulub jamun honey balls were actually hot when fresh from the tray so beware; they were quite good. Unfortunately the rice pudding was off-white and had a the musty flavor of fermentation I am used to when brewing my own beer,  so it had gone off. I told the server (owner?) and he quickly replaced it so at least that was taken care of immediately. Weekday lunch is $12.99 which is quite reasonable these days. All-in-all even with the minor staleness issues it was a good place for a nice casual Indian lunch.
