Sushi Legend - North York (Japanese)
Sushi Legend is located at 10 Ravel Road, just northeast of Leslie and Finch in North York. We'd already reviewed the Scarborough location and I was surprised to discover it wasn't the only one. We went for a weekend lunch, and it was very full of other patrons so I would recommend reservations for groups larger than two; interior was modern and pleasant. Ordering is via iPad menus. Tea is left on carafe at table, non-disposable chopsticks are used, soy sauce was light and all low sodium and quite fresh. Ginger is green, ie not dyed pink. As with the other location, distinctive metal barrel mugs are present for the tea, and the tea was excellent. AYCD pop is included in the price.
For starters, Mishy said that the wakame/seaweed salad was amazingly good. Green salad had excellent unique dressing. Miso soup was fantastic, full-bodied and super savory. Beef teriyaki gorgeous and tender. Shrimp tempura was slightly oily and yam tempura even more so (though it is difficult to make it otherwise), but the sauce excellent with wine hints. Taro tempura was good and less oily. Salmon nigiri was excellent and fresh. Salmon rose was also super-fresh, and salmon spicy sushi just about perfect. Philadelphia roll was an excellent balance of avocado, cream cheese and salmon. Unfortunately in the avocado-cucumber roll, the avocado was a bit squishy/going off.
Happily, that was the only downer. Chicken fried rice was exploding with savour. Chicken teriyaki sauce was excellent with pepper flakes. "Sexy summer roll" was different and delicious, with a bright and happy flavor. Beef short rib was delicious and I usually don't prefer them. Beef udon soup was delicious and savoury. Chicken rice was very good.
For dessert, tiramisu was excellent and Mishy also loved it. Lychee yogurt was original and amazing. Green tea and vanilla ice creams were super-fresh and excellent, mango ice cream probably the best I ever had. Coffee pudding was excellent and amazingly good, as well as unique. Banana tempura was good, mango yogurt excellent. Mango pudding was also excellent. Mishy unfortunately described the unique coconut pudding as "gross," but I loved it. Fruit jellies had tiny piece of fruit at the bottom, which I always find a nice touch.
Weekend lunch at Sushi Legend $20.95; this does include the AYCD pop. The price is at the high end for the genre, but I would say that with the one exception Sushi Legend itself is at the high-end of the genre, thus it is a reasonable value for the quality of the offerings. We both certainly enjoyed our lunch there.
